If you have a 12'x20' oval with 54" depth, that would be roughly 7200 gallons. When you first install the a salt system, you would need about 5.5 bags of salt (40 lbs each). That doesn't get used up or evaporate. You only add more because of rain or if you drain the pool. I would say most people spend $20/year on salt on average.
