Salt systems produce chlorine for sanitizing pool water. For outdoor pools, Cyanuric Acid, aka Stabilizer, is added to the water to shield the chlorine from degradation by the ultraviolet rays of the sun. Cyanuric acid (CYA) should be maintained between 30 and 50 ppm. Increasing levels of CYA will increase protection from the sun until that protection levels out at 50 ppm. So above 50 ppm, the water gains no further protection from the sun, but the CYA will increasingly reduce the effectiveness of your chlorine causing your pool to require ever greater chlorine production. Since the only way to remove CYA from water is to partially drain and refill, it is important to avoid adding stabilized products to your pool unless you are below the 30 ppm threshold.
