Orenda CV-700 can help significantly when there are organic odors coming from the water, but in such situations it likely needs to be paired with a pool shock and/or running the salt chlorine generator on full output for long enough to achieve to sustained high chlorine levels in order to completely eliminate the smell.
A 'fishy' or foul odor in pool water is typically an early warning sign of a budding algae bloom, bacteria, or a heavy buildup of organic wasted and chloramines (which happens when your chlorine gets bogged down by organic waste like sweat, oils, or leaves).
A 3-step approach to fix the issue could look something like this:
- Kill living organics: Run chlorine generator at max output / run times, and/or add liquid chlorine (may be faster), in order to shock the pool water. This will kill the bacteria/algae and burn off the chloramines, all of which may be contributing to the issue..
- Break Down the Waste (CV-700): Add the initial purge dose of Orenda CV-700. CV-700 is an enzyme and phosphate remover, not a sanitizer. While it will not kill existing algae or bacteria, it frees up the chlorine to do the work it really needs to do. The enzymes will rapidly digest the non-living organic waste that was tying up your chlorine, while the phosphate remover will starve out any remaining algae.
- Clean the Filter: Make sure your pump is running for an adequate amount of time and clean your filter. Trapped organic debris in a filter is a very common culprit for fishy-smelling water.
Once the smell is gone, using CV-700 for weekly maintenance will keep your water's organic load and phosphate levels low. This makes the chlorine produced by your salt cell much more efficient and will prevent any weird odors from coming back!
