Unlike a traditional single-speed pump, newer programmable pumps (a variable speed or adaptive flow pump) are meant to remain powered continuously and use its own onboard programming to control when it runs and at what speed.
If you are using an external timer to coordinate other equipment—such as a salt chlorinator, booster pump, or heater—you can still use the timer for that equipment. Just make sure its programmed run times fall within the programmable pump’s scheduled circulation periods, so the equipment only operates while the pump is running and water is flowing.
