Variable flow pumps, like the CircuPool SmartFlo Adaptive Flow™ pump, allow you to set a specific flow rate, which is extremely valuable. Unfortunately most pools with variable speed pumps just guess at what RPM's to set, and end up loosing out on a lot of their potential energy savings. Pool systems typically need to a certain range of flow to work properly (speaking broadly: 30gpm on the low end, up to 50-80gpm on the high end depending on the size of your pool and your equipment), so if you aren't achieving these then its likely you're either wasting energy or starving the pool system of proper flow. Even better, pool pumps with adaptive technology adjust automatically to maintain the desired flow, even when pool system conditions change, which is another big reason why they end up providing better performance than standard variable speed pumps, which only run at arbitrarily set RPMs without any optimization. Pools care about flow, not pump motor speed.
