Not necessarily, but it may help you get the pool swimmable as fast as possible. You can install the system at any time, and as long as you have added the correct amount of salt to the water, you can turn the salt system on so it can generate chlorine to help it clear up the pool. At the same time or before, you can also add chlorine or shock as normal - it is not incompatible.
