Do I need to wait for my chlorine level to drop low before converting over to a salt water pool?

Not in the least, there are no compatibility issues with the water in your traditionally chlorinated water and the chlorine generated by the salt chlorinator. If your chlorine level is currently high, just leave the salt chlorinator on a low setting until you level gets in range, and then set the salt chlorinator accordingly.
