I have about 22 inches of straight pipe where I want to install this. If installing the flow switch and inverted cell on the same straight pipe, is the 6-12” of pipe before the flow switch required? Since it is the same straight pipe, can it be less? Or will the flow have to be installed after the cell?

Flow switches work best when they are not installed near an elbow or turn in the plumbing. To take up the least space, you can install the flow switch after the cell (the cell counts as straight pipe), or otherwise make sure there is some straight pipe before the flow switch if you install it elsewhere.
