Assuming that the pool water has no underlying salt level - it is advisable to test - your 16,000 gallon pool will require 467 lbs. of salt. With the typical 40 lb. salt bags, that will mean that you should buy about 12 bags. After testing the water, if you find that the water has some salt already, you can refer to your owner's manual to determine the amount needed.
