The system must be installed on the return line as the last pieces of equipment the water passes through before returning to the pool: always after the pump, filter, heater (if applicable), etc. I'm attaching a diagram to this thread.

Water does not flow through the heater year round. Can this be installed between the filter and the heater.
ANSWER: No, it is not recommended to install a salt chlorinator before the heater. Heaters are most often only used seasonally. You would install the salt chlorinator somewhere before the point the piping returns to the pool and somewhere after the heater where you always get water flowing through your plumbing, whether or not the heater is in use.
